Technical Document

Brief Overview

Corn gluten feed (CGF) is by-product of the corn wet milling process. The CGF consists of maize bran and maize steep liquor. The contents of energy and protein in CGF are relatively lower than corn gluten meal since they are related to proportion of bran, corn steep liquor and other components. However, the energy and protein contents of CGF are effective to some animals such as gestating sows.

Manufacturing Process

Corn gluten feed is a byproduct of the wet-milling process. Wet-milling process separates the corn kernel into starch, oil, protein, and bran. First, the corn is soaked in sulfurous acid. The resulting steep liquor contains protein, minerals, vitamins and energy sources. The starch and oil are extracted from the swollen kernel. The remaining fiber or bran is mixed with the steep liquor. This product, wet corn gluten feed, contains about 40 percent dry matter. The wet corn gluten feed can be dried to about 90 percent dry matter and is called dry Corn Gluten Feed.

Animal Feed Industry

In this industry, corn gluten feed is largely used as feed raw material to provide protein and energy to animals, such as  layer, broiler, and gestating sow
