Resin is a natural mixture of oil, carboxylic acid and oxygenated product of
terpene derived from Pine tree. These resins in early stage are in liquid gummy
form but it gets hardened with time and treatment. The resins compounds are
classified in different manner depending on its chemical composition and its
application. Resins produced from pine are known as naval storage. Oleo Pine
Resins are soluble in alcohol but not in water and their colour vary from clear
to dark brown. These resin tapping has various social and economic benefits.
The quality of resin depends on several factors like species of pine trees,
locality and environmental factor, tapping of trees, tree morphology, side of
stem (more resin secreted from south than north of stem),soil, nature of forest
Resins is collected by tapping of tree. Various steps followed before the resin
is collected and marketed are shown in block diagram.
Pine resin is impermeable to
water so it can be used to seal seams, repair breaks/holes in boats, shoes and
structures to prevent water leaks. Glue is also made from pine resins and they
are used to seal books, boots etc.
Paint and Varnishes Industry
Oleo pine resins are easily
soluble in alcohols and other solvents and they have high refractive index
which makes them glossy. Therefore, leo pine resins or their derivatives are
major component in paint industry.
Due to their glossy property,
they are even used as food glazing agents. Oleo resins likes copaiba is used to
treat stomach cancer and ulcer. It is used for therapeutic purpose and incense.
